Compared to large group teaching, small group teaching is much better. But why are they still using lectures in large groups at universities?
Answer:
The answer is simple, price and convenience.
Explanation:
Although it is better to teach in smaller groups, that would also require more teachers. If the classes were smaller there would either need to be longer working hours for the teachers they already have, or more teachers. Another option universities could use to teach in smaller groups are to accept less people to their school. All of these options cause a drop in the money these schools gain. With longer working hours the professors must be paid more. If more people are hired, that would also mean losing money (staff must be paid sufficiently). Lastly, less students means less money coming to these schools. In summary, the classes are larger because of the price of hiring more staff and because of the convenience of having larger classes.
